Chocolarder is a small batch bean to bar chocolate maker in Cornwall UK. They use plastic free packaging, and their cacao is slavery free and fairly traded. Website: www.chocolarder.com We were able to buy a bar of their chocolate from the New Zealand business, The Chocolate Bar: www.thechocolatebar.nz Priced at $14.90 for a 70g bar. Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh in a 72% Dark Chocolate. 4 ingredients: Cocoa beans, unrefined sugar, cocoa butter infused with Frankincense and Myrrh and gold leaf. The bean variety is Amazonian Criollo from Peru. Frankincense comes from the dried sap of the Boswellia tree, and Myrrh comes from the sap of the Commiphora tree. Chocolarder source their Frankincense and Myrrh from independent Moroccan farmers that produce high quality resins and are skilled enough not to permanently damage the trees. We were a little worried about it being 72%. That tended to be too strong for our tastes.
BUT this bar is BEAUTIFUL! The chocolate looks pretty and we were excited by the gold flecks. The fragrance of the chocolate is dark and fruity. The chocolate is smooth and lush. The taste is a slow build. It reminded Johanan of walking through the Redwoods. The fruity, tangy dark chocolate is there alongside a wood taste with a hint of pine. The aftertaste is a tree sap, and a tanginess. Johanan demolished it. We loved it so much we gave this one a Chocolate Gazette Rosette.
