Ever since the first Covid lockdown, our family has been having zoom meetings every few weeks. Every time there is some sort of activity or challenge we have to do. A few months ago Joni saw the Chocolate Covered Tarantula and discovered the Eat Crawlers Website. Eat Crawlers are a wild food company that specialises in edible insects and cricket flour. All the insects are sourced from sustainable, ethical and reputable farms throughout Asia and prepared in New Zealand. They also realise that insects are usually not part of a New Zealanders diet, so they don't mind marketing the scary icky factor too. Plans were afoot. Every family group got sent a surprise box that they were not allowed to open until the zoom meeting. The chocolate Tarantula was always going to be Joni's. On the menu for other family members were chilli chocolate locusts, scorpion lollipops and salted caramel covered scorpions, alongside honey roasted crickets and ant lollipops. So what did the Tarantula taste like? The chocolate was a distant memory that cannot be recalled in the effort to chew and swallow the spider. It tasted like hay or straw with a definite dried insect texture. It took a lot of chewing to be able to swallow it and there was still bits of it in between the teeth and around the mouth. What did everyone else think of their insect yummies? Here are the best reactions. Apparently the honey roasted crickets and chilli chocolate locusts were quite nice.
